If you had told me a few years ago that I'd be learning to code, I wouldn't have believed you. Coding was never my dream. I just loved learning different skills, especially if they could help me make money. Before I found coding, I went through multiple phases—some exciting, some frustrating—but each step led me here.
Chasing Different Passions
YouTube & The Search for a Passion
I always wanted to be a YouTuber, but there were two big problems:
I was camera shy.
I didn't know what my content should be.
Since I enjoyed learning new skills, I thought, Why not make a YouTube channel about learning different skills?
From Flips to Magic Tricks
My first challenge? Backflip. It didn't end well—I broke my thumb. 😅
After that, I tried parkour, but it felt too risky. So, I switched to pen spinning, then magic tricks. I loved making people go "wow," but over time, I lost interest.
Since I planned to document my skill-learning journey, I thought of recording my progress. But I had no phone of my own, and sneaking my mom's phone wasn't a long-term solution. Eventually, I gave up on the idea and moved on.
Trying to Figure Out Life
After secondary school, I worked for a year, then went to university. But even in school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I ended up dropping out in my 200 level to figure things out.
At one point, I considered music production because I loved phonk beats and country music. Then, I got into video editing, which brought in a little income, but not enough to feel like my own boss. I wanted more.
How I Finally Started Coding
Originally, I planned to go into graphics and design. I even saved up money for it.
But then, my brother found a coding internship training online and convinced me to try it instead.
At first, I hesitated. Coding sounded like brain-racking, stressful work—all I could picture was hacking, complex algorithms, and endless frustration. But after thinking about it, I asked myself:
Is it worth trying?
I took the leap and joined the internship, and honestly, that decision changed everything.
The Beginning of My Coding Journey
At first, JavaScript felt like an alien language—confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming. But I kept going.
The first time I built a simple webpage, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time—excitement.
Unlike my past interests, coding gave me the power to build real things from scratch, and that's what made me stay.
During my internship, my team and I worked on a restaurant reservation website as our final project. It was a great learning experience, from collaborating with others to building a functional web app.
What's Next?
I'm still growing my YouTube channel (AI-generated videos) and TikTok page (transitions and velocity edits).
I'm also planning to dive into digital marketing, but that's a story for another day. 😉
Final Thoughts
Looking back, I see how every failed attempt, every transition, and every phase shaped me.
Coding wasn't my first choice, but it turned out to be the best one.
