Have you ever wondered how people know which part of their website is working — and what’s not?

As a freelance digital marketer, I help businesses grow online. But before I can improve a website, I first need to know how people are using it.

That’s where a simple but powerful tool helps me — it’s called Google Tag Manager.

Now don’t worry — this article isn’t full of techy terms. I’m going to explain it like we’re having coffee

What Is Google Tag Manager?

Think of your website like a shop.

Google Tag Manager (or GTM) is like a smart CCTV camera for your shop. It watches what your visitors do — what they click, where they scroll, what pages they spend time on.

And the best part? You don’t need to know coding or hire a tech team to set it up.

Why Do I Use It?

  • I use GTM because it helps answer questions like:
  • Are people actually reading my blog or just clicking away?
  • How many are clicking the WhatsApp button?
  • Are visitors reaching my contact form — or leaving before they see it?
  • Which links are people clicking the most?

These small insights help me and my clients improve the website, get more leads, and make better decisions.

What Do I Track?

Here are a few things I regularly track using GTM:

Image description

  1. Clicks on Buttons (like “Contact Me” or “Get Quote”)
So I know how many people are interested in reaching out.

  2. Scrolls (How far people scroll down the page)
If most people don’t reach halfway — I improve the content.

  3. Link Clicks
Which blog posts are sending people away? Are they clicking external links?

  4. Phone Number or WhatsApp Taps
Especially useful for local businesses. Helps track customer intent.

A Real-Life Example

For a small local business I worked with in Alappuzha, I found out that most visitors were not seeing the contact form at the bottom of the page.

So I moved the form higher up — and guess what?

The business started getting 30% more inquiries just by changing the placement.

That’s the power of understanding your audience through simple tracking.

Final Thought

If you have a website (or plan to have one), tracking is not optional anymore — it’s essential. And with tools like Google Tag Manager, you can do it without being a tech expert.

As a freelance digital marketer, I help businesses understand their numbers and turn them into results.
