Google Maps is introducing advanced AI tools to combat fake reviews and fraudulent business profile edits. Partnering with Gemini, an AI model, Google is enhancing its ability to detect suspicious activities such as fraudulent reviews and rogue profile edits (e.g., changing a business category from "cafe" to "plumber"). In 2024, these AI tools blocked thousands of risky profile edits and detected manipulative reviews.

To further enhance its detection, Google has started issuing alerts in major markets like the U.S., U.K., and India, when fake reviews are flagged and removed. In extreme cases, reviews at suspicious locations may be temporarily suspended. Google has removed over 240 million reviews, stopped 70 million risky edits, and deleted 12 million fake business profiles in 2024.

Additionally, Google is imposing restrictions on violators of its policies. In 2024, 900,000 accounts were restricted from posting, and certain locations may face temporary bans on reviews if suspicious activity is detected. These measures aim to ensure trust and transparency on Google Maps, benefiting legitimate businesses by preventing misleading content and providing a fairer playing field for all users.
